Storage Tips
- Rent the smallest amount of space you’ll need and pack smartly to utilize all of the space available. You’ll be surprised at how much you can fit!
- Before you even start packing, gather all the materials you need, like boxes, markers, packing tape, bubble wrap, protective material, etc. Moving takes a lot of work, and you don’t want to waste time going back and forth to the store!
- Use standard-sized boxes as much as possible.
- Don’t pack in plastic bags, even if you’re tired and it seems like a convenient solution. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re packing up your self-storage unit.
- Prepare your storage unit by laying down a protective cover over the floor. This will help keep your belongings clean. You can also utilize pallets to lift your belongings up off the floor, as concrete floors in the storage unit can get cold and damp.
- Plan carefully and pack the items you may need access to near the front.
- Stack heavy things on the bottom and lighter/more fragile items on top.
- Leave a small space between your belongings and the walls/ceilings to allow for air circulation.
- Label your boxes on all four sides and mark boxes with pictures/mirrors/dishes as FRAGILE.
- If you’re storing for an extended period of time, wipe off bikes and tools before storing and then apply machine oil to prevent rusting.
- Store shovels, rakes, and other yard maintenance items in a large trash can and stack extra trash cans to save space.
- Remove or break down any furniture that you can, such as removing the legs of tables and couches.
- Store sofas on end to save floor space and prop mattresses on their side, but be sure to have something next to them so they don’t warp or get lumpy.
